happy pulaski day

The trouble with days off is how much they make me want to be in college again. I'd love to blow off my classes and drive to Michigan and visit Hillsdale and East Lansing and Alpena for the week.

Instead I've done most of my laundry, cleaned the apartment, and pretended to finish my grad school application. I'm not even fooling myself, though. I'm waiting for the landlord to call me back, eating pineapple out of a can and wondering if this is it. I don't think it is.

Casimir Pulaski, in case you were wondering, was a Polish-born Revolutionary War officer, known for his contributions to the training of cavalry and infantry in the Revolutionary War. He died in battle at the Siege of Savannah when he was 32 years old, and is commemorated on the first Monday in March, when the school children of Illinois stay at home and play video games.

In the morning in the winter shade
On the first of March on the holiday
I thought I saw you breathing

Oh the glory that the Lord has made
And the complications when I see His face
In the morning in the window

Oh the glory when He took our place
But He took my shoulders and He shook my face
And He takes and He takes and He takes

"Casimir Pulaski Day"
