here's a recent thought:

Pain (physical and otherwise) as God's mercy. Pain is a symptom of a problem. Without symptoms, we would not know we had a problem.

You could burn your hand off touching a stove, for instance.

- Both literally and metaphorically.

Even if you couldn't feel the pain of burning, it would still be a problem. You need both those hands.

Yes. And so, too, can we become desensitized to pain and lose some of our inherent reflexes.

I thought of you tonight - I had a patient tonight who told me he didn't want medication for his pain because he figured it served a purpose to tell you something's wrong, and then he used the same stove and hand analogy that you did. I figured I didn't need to start an argument by telling him that once you know what's wrong, you shouldn't have to be in pain anymore.
